A native of Youngstown, Ohio, pianist and organist Dave Thomas has established himself as one of Northeast Ohio's most versatile and accomplished musicians, seamlessly bridging the worlds of jazz, R&B, gospel, and musical theater throughout his distinguished career.

Thomas first gained recognition as an original member of the R&B group "Sweet Thunder," which launched his professional performing career and established his reputation in the regional music scene. His exceptional talent soon led to collaborations with an impressive roster of legendary artists, including the late gospel icon James Cleveland, jazz legends Dizzy Gillespie and Albert Ayler, saxophonist Grover Washington, Motown star David Ruffin, and vocalist Jean Carre. These diverse musical partnerships showcase Thomas's remarkable ability to adapt his style across multiple genres while maintaining his distinctive musical voice.


Beyond his work as a performer, Thomas has made significant contributions to musical theater as a writer, performer, and musical director. His theatrical works include "The Living Cross," "The Audition," and "Black Nativity," productions that have been performed throughout the United States and Canada, bringing his unique blend of musical storytelling to audiences across North America.

Thomas's commitment to education has been equally impressive throughout his career. He has served on the faculty of several prestigious institutions, including The Cleveland School of the Arts, Cuyahoga Community College, Cleveland State University, and Case Western Reserve University. His educational philosophy combines rigorous musical training with practical performance experience, helping to shape the next generation of musicians. Currently, he continues his educational mission as a music teacher with the Cleveland Board of Education School District and as a faculty member at Cleveland State University.


As an author, Thomas co-wrote "A Child's First Book of Spirituals," a groundbreaking educational resource that earned the prestigious Coretta Scott King Award, recognizing outstanding books that celebrate the African American experience and promote understanding and appreciation of the culture and contribution of all people.


Thomas's spiritual commitment to music is evident in his current roles as Musical Staff member of The Southeast Seventh Day Adventist and Minister of Music at St. Timothy Baptist Church, where he continues to use his gifts to inspire and uplift communities through worship music.

His extensive educational background reflects his lifelong dedication to musical excellence and continuous learning. Thomas earned his undergraduate and graduate music degrees from Cleveland State University, the Cleveland Institute of Music, and Case Western Reserve University. His pursuit of musical knowledge extended internationally with postgraduate work at the Royal Holloway College in London, England, where he broadened his musical perspectives and deepened his understanding of global musical traditions.


Today, Dave Thomas remains an active and influential figure in Cleveland's music scene, continuing to perform, teach, and mentor while maintaining his deep spiritual connection to music through his church work. His career exemplifies the power of musical versatility, educational commitment, and community service, making him a respected figure not only in Northeast Ohio but throughout the broader musical community.
